DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations is a major campaign expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages, developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. Released on July 7, 2026, the expansion continues the Slayer’s story following the events of the main game. Revelations is designed as a substantial new chapter rather than a small collection of additional missions, adding new environments, enemies, weapons, puzzles, story elements, and combat mechanics. The expansion is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S and requires the base game to play.
The story places the DOOM Slayer in a much darker and more surreal situation. Wounded and betrayed, the Slayer is thrown into a merciless purgatory from which escape requires him to confront painful truths and uncover new sources of strength. A mysterious ally helps guide him through this strange realm as he attempts to break free and ultimately confront an enormous abomination connected to the gods. The setting allows Revelations to explore a different side of the Slayer’s mythology while continuing the dark fantasy and science-fiction mixture established by The Dark Ages.
Gameplay retains the heavy, aggressive combat style of The Dark Ages while introducing a major new weapon called the Chain Spear. The weapon changes the way the Slayer moves around the battlefield and provides additional offensive and mobility options. The expansion brings back more movement-focused elements, including grappling and dashing mechanics, allowing players to move through combat encounters more dynamically than in much of the original campaign. The Chain Spear also develops as the player progresses, rewarding players who spend time learning its abilities and incorporating it into their combat style.
The expansion also introduces new levels with deeper puzzles, new demons, new mysteries, and additional combat encounters. The Ripatorium receives a major 3.0 update alongside the expansion, adding three new maps, additional demons, fully upgraded weapons, expanded customization, improved passcode generation, and the ability to save and load personal presets. These additions give players more reasons to continue experimenting with weapons and combat combinations after completing the main campaign.
Visually, Revelations continues the distinctive medieval-inspired interpretation of the DOOM universe established by The Dark Ages. Hellish environments, gigantic creatures, demonic architecture, brutal combat effects, and detailed weapons give the expansion an appropriately violent and imposing presentation. The soundtrack and sound effects remain an important part of the experience, emphasizing the impact of every weapon and melee attack while creating an intense atmosphere during large-scale battles. The combination of dark fantasy imagery with DOOM’s science-fiction influences gives the expansion its own visual identity while remaining recognizable as part of The Dark Ages.
From a technical perspective, Revelations launched alongside Update 4, which included the expansion as well as quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes. Additional hotfixes were subsequently released to address further issues, including crashes. Overall, DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations expands the original game with a new story, new areas, enemies, puzzles, and a significantly different approach to movement and combat. Its Chain Spear mechanics and additional content make it particularly well suited to a large gameplay playlist featuring the complete campaign, combat encounters, exploration, boss battles, secrets, and the various new challenges introduced by the expansion.
