So this is the one. Game Freak's first announced AAA project outside of Pokémon, ever, in the studio's entire history, and instead of a cute creature collector they went and made what's shaping up to be a bleak souls-like about a girl and her dog surviving the apocalypse. Nobody saw this coming when Project Bloom leaked back in 2023 and I don't think anyone's fully recovered from the tonal whiplash since.
Setting is post-apocalyptic Japan, year 4026. You play as Emma the Sealer, an outcast shunned by society for being "Blightborn," alongside Koo, a stray dog who's also been touched by the blight corrupting the world. The whole hook of the combat is that you're not just directing an AI companion the way most games handle animal buddies, Emma fights in real time with sword-based melee while you actively command Koo through a separate, almost turn-based input layer to unleash his own techniques mid-fight. Official description calls it a "one-person, one-dog action RPG" which is a genuinely bizarre way to describe a game and I love it.

█ TRAILERS
Full trailer rundown for anyone catching up before launch:
- Xbox Showcase reveal (June 2025):
- State of Play release date trailer (Feb 2026):
- Pre-order trailer (April 2026):
- Combat Overview trailer (this is the one to watch if you only watch one):
- Release Date trailer:
The Combat Overview trailer is the most useful for actually understanding how the Emma/Koo tag-team system works in practice, it shows Emma parrying and chaining sword attacks while you're simultaneously queueing up Koo abilities on a separate command wheel. Genuinely looks like nothing else out right now, closest comparison points people are throwing around are Sekiro for the parry-focused melee and old-school command-based JRPGs for the Koo half.
█ STORY / SETTING
Per the official synopsis: humanity's last hope rests with Emma and Koo as they travel a "beautiful yet harsh" post-apocalyptic Japan where blighted forests erupt without warning across the wasteland. Emma and Koo are tasked with hunting down Bosses scattered across the world and capturing their powers in order to eventually take down the actual Beast of Reincarnation itself. Marketing's been leaning hard on the "profound story with intertwined secrets" angle and every preview outlet has commented on how much heavier and more melancholic the tone is compared to anything Game Freak's put their name on before.
█ COMBAT / STRUCTURE
- Real-time melee combat centered on Emma's sword with parry timing as a core mechanic
- Koo is commanded through a separate ability system, closer to command-based/turn-based RPG inputs layered on top of the real-time action
- Adjustable difficulty options, so no FromSoft-style "no easy mode" discourse this time around, this one's opt-in on both ends
- Confirmed NOT open world, more of a structured, area-based progression similar to something like a Souls game's interconnected map rather than a fully open sandbox
- Bond/relationship system between Emma and Koo that reportedly affects abilities as the story progresses
█ EDITIONS / PRE-ORDER STUFF
Standard pre-order bonus across all platforms is a Brown Shiba skin for Koo plus 30,000 Amber (in-game currency). The Digital Deluxe Edition bumps that up considerably: both Black and Brown Shiba skins for Koo, an "Oni's Hat" cosmetic for Emma, a unique sword called "Big Dipper," 100,000 Amber, and, delightfully, a handful of in-game vegetable seedlings that I have to assume tie into some kind of camp/farming downtime mechanic nobody's fully detailed yet.
█ PREVIEW COVERAGE
Embargo lifted a couple weeks back and the reception out of hands-on previews has been cautiously very positive, more than I think most people expected going in. Been seeing a lot of "parrying helps your dog too" style headlines from the preview wave, which tells you the tag-team combat is the thing actually landing with press. Full reviews haven't dropped yet since it's technically still pre-launch as of this post, so treat all of this as preview impressions rather than final verdicts. Will update the OT once review embargo lifts, should be very soon given the release date.
Recurring notes across previews so far:
- The parry timing window is apparently tight, more Sekiro than Elden Ring in terms of difficulty philosophy
- Koo's command menu has a learning curve but becomes close to essential once you're fighting anything past the early bosses
- Some concern about technical performance, a couple of outlets specifically flagged rough frame pacing during the preview build, hopefully patched by launch
- Universal praise for the art direction and the way blighted areas visually corrupt the environment in real time

Dropping this OT a day early since it unlocks for early access on some platforms tonight depending on your timezone. Impressions thread essentially starts now, mods feel free to merge if there's already a pre-release thread floating around. Who's playing day one and who's waiting on reviews given the performance concerns from preview coverage? Enjoy!

Okay I have some good news and some bad news a few hours in. For context I am playing this via Gamepass on my Xbox Series X. From what I gather this is kinda a long game all said and done so keep that in mind. I put probably a good two hours into Beast of Reincarnation so far. It's late so I'll just list some bullet points below for you all.
- Terrible performance on the Xbox Series X (talking single digits frame rates at times).
- Emma and Koo felt dynamic mechanically right off the bat albeit a tad bit of jank in animations.
- First few hours has great pacing i.e action set piece gameplay sequences, open world exploration, boss fight, NPC chats with solid tutorials.
- Visually not impressive on the Xbox Series X at all.
- More story elements than I thought there'd be featuring cutscenes, early dialogue tree sequences etc.
- Game seems to use a chapter layout with the Cleanse Walker hub respite.
- The world design reminds me of Nier Automata and Enslaved Odyssey To The West.
- This is a AA video game
- Gameplay part Sekiro, Stellarblade and Bayonetta.
- Beast of Reincarnation is good because of it's combat foremost. Other aspects like performance, visuals early on are rough but the combat was nailed IMO.
- I like it so far. I just need to put more solid hours into it's loop as far as upgrading and exploration are concerned.
- Defeated the Rangifer boss on first try playing on normal difficulty.
- Three different difficulties to choose from (anytime).
That's it for now taking my ass to bed.

Thanks for the impressions. It seems looking at reviews today it's a 7 or 7.5 game which is fine by me since the combat was nailed like you say. This type of game is all about the gameplay.Okay I have some good news and some bad news a few hours in. For context I am playing this via Gamepass on my Xbox Series X. Enjoying it so far playing on PC gamepass. Game just needs an FOV slider desperately.
What is the meaning of consciousness?
The more I play the better it gets. Loving the combat mechanics and story/world building continues to pick up as I go forward.
What is the meaning of consciousness?
Yep same here. Xbox Series X received an over-night patch which fixed all of the performance issues I had yesterday. I need to put at least twenty more hours into this to really judge it. Thing is. If I play twenty more hours that means I really like it 🤣The more I play the better it gets. Loving the combat mechanics and story/world building continues to pick up as I go forward.
