After putting a few hours Into the final release of The Diofield Chronicle I can say it’s a good game if you’re into tactical games like XCOM, Gears Tactics and the like. I never played the demo but read so many glowing reviews of it so I decided to just jump into the finished product.

You know, for this site and my youtube channel. But more importantly for me to discover new great games. The Diofield Chronicle supposedly took gameplay inspiration from League of Legends. Admission time! I never played League of Legends so I wouldn’t know.

I can say the gameplay in The Diofield Chronicle is much faster and real time as compared to XCOM of Gears Tactics. What sticks out to me so far is the story. It’s early but the story is sorta grabbing my attention. You basically start out a group of three rag tag mercenaries who get hired by a wealthy man who’s fighting the good fight.

Through various dialogue interaction choice sequences and copious cutscenes the story is being told at a good pace. I’m at a point where I’m completing missions and gaining more allies to use in-battles. You have classes for instance like soldier, joust, magician, knight, archer and assassin etc.

All classes have their own weapons and special abilities to level up. In between matches there is a hub base of sorts where you can talk to NPCs, buy weapons and upgrade skills. As you progress the main story more parts of the hub base open up allowing you more customizable options for your troops.

I’m playing The Diofield Chronicle on medium difficulty and I have to say it’s pretty easy so far. Normally in tactical videogames I would had at least died once after playing for hours on normal. So yea, I am surprise at how easy the matches have been so far against the cpu . Easy matches but still quite fun. Let the latter be clear.

My tactics so far been to send the horse guy (forget his name) to distract a group of enemies then send Andrias to assassinate them from behind with his special attack. I have the bow guy and Waltaquin sit back and deal damage or heal if need be. Gameplay is fun especially when you cast Bahamut down on a group.

Maps so far have been good with a nice variety of scenery. You can collect obs and other important items for your squad on each battlefield. I have crushed a few bosses. Bossfights so far have not been difficult. With that said, I am still early in the story.

Visuals aren’t anything special playing on the Playstation 5. I am using performance mode for higher framerate. Music and sound design is good and reminds me of high fantasy videogames and the like.

It’s early, but so far so good. Expect a full review of The Diofield Chronicle when I beat the game and the credits have rolled. If you want to watch all my gameplay videos for this game visit The Diofield Video Gallery Playlist. Thanks for reading – Jason
