Introduction

My history with Resident Evil dates back to the late 1990’s when my cousin introduced me to Resident Evil OG on the PS. Great days back then let me tell you. Capcom has been through real ups and downs the younger generation of gamers probably have no idea of. At any rate CapGods are back with Resident Evil Requiem and let me tell you. It’s the perfect Resident Evil video game for me.

Presentation

Requiem has it all in my opinion. It has first and third perspectives for two separate horror genre campaigns that were written strong. Great visuals on base console. No glaring techincal bugs or glitches to write about.

Sure, horror aficionados’ might not like Grace’s or Leon’s campaigns becuase they are different but that’s the point. I personally cannot remember a AAA horror video game that brilliantly weaved in so many perspectives, genres within the horror genre into one strong coherent package. And hell no Resident Evil 6 doesn’t count🤣 .

Story

Resident Evil Requiem is a requiem of Resident Evil. The story was solid and coherant for a Resi game. Ozwell Spencer’s “Elpis” anti-viral pretty much ends the T-virus and starts a new chapter going forward in the franchise. “Anarchy!” 😁

Throughout Leon’s story there are nods to his past as he strolls through Raccoon City whether it’s from Marvin Branagh to Raccoon City Police easter eggs. Requiem is a fitting name for this particular Resident Evil no doubt.

Grace Ashcroft is a reporter with the FBI who’s trying to uncover recent murders but also seek closure to her mother’s death, Alyssa Ashcrft. Leon is investigating the recent deaths as well who is also dying from the T-virus along with Sherry Birkin.

Leon and Grace’s stories intertwine culminating in releasing Elpis and killing Victor Gideon who is the main badguy in Requiem. Victor Gideon often reminded me of Heath Ledger’s Joker.

Gameplay

Resident Evil Requiem implors two campaigns with two perspectives (first and third) for both Grace Ashcroft and Leon S Kennedy. To me, this is why Requiem stands above the majority of Resident Evil titles because it creates extra immersion separate to a character and their story.

My first playthrough was “default” i.e. Grace first person and Leon third person which was perfect because it created a more tense representation of Grace’s story due to her being a petite woman with anxiety.

Leon’s campaign is action horror he beasically shoots, parries and kicks the souls out of infected which was a blast and engaging. Grace is survival horror. Leon is action horror. Both great, yet different and melded into each other brilliantly.

As you play Grace you get breakable shivs, collect infected blood to craft items and a one handed pistol. By completing challenges you can unlock powerful gear and weapons for Grace. Resident Evil’s gameplay is designed for replayability which means after you beat the game the “runs” start.

Leon’s gameplay centers around collecting points via infected kills which translate into buying better guns, armor etc. Unlocked CP points nets Leon such classics and infinite ammo and Rocket Launcher etc.

The nostalgia during Leon’s campaign was long overdue returning to where it all started with him in Raccoon city. Fighting Mr X again was just a cherry on top. If I have one negative about the gameplay it would be the detonator parts collecting mission.

Visuals

Some of, if not, the best visuals to date on the base Playstation 5. Capcom really flexed their engine here showcasing busy urban city streets filled with pedestrians to dark claustrophobic caves. Requiem showcases some of the best visuals I seen in gaming.

Sound:

Some really good musical scores and soundtracks with vocals. Voice acting with Grace reminded me too much of Ri-ri-ri-riiiick! and Morty If you catch my drift😂 Leon was solid with his 1980’s macho stoic hero self per usual.

Resident Evil Requiem: Masterful presentation weaving perspectives of protagonists into two brilliant yet different survival horror genres. Requiem is the perfect Resident Evil for me in this modern day and age. I cannot believe Capcom made Resident Evil 6. Jason
