Introduction
My New year’s resolution for 2024 is, well one of them is to play more Indie video games. Not only to bring the Indie market to my brand but first and foremost to experience the games.
Anyways, growing up in the 1980’s I watch those late night cinemax slasher flicks revolving around night call radio stations. After doing some research on Killer Frequency I thought why not and start my New year’s resolution a week early and give it a go. Killer Frequency Gameplay Videos For reference, I played this on my Xbox Series X. Killer Frequency release date was June 1, 2023.
Presentation
Killer Frequency is a Indie video game first person murder mystery where you play as Forrest Nash a big wig Chicago DJ who’s now DJing in the small town Gallows Creek on the nightshift. Before I get into the story and gameplay elements of this great Indie I want to write about it’s presentation which is really good.
The vibe and aesthetic of the small town radio station setting was spot on. The visuals were charming, voice acting and dialogue trees intertwined seamlessly creating memorable humor filled moments.
The music was really good. It should be since it takes place at a radio station. As for bugs and or glitches I didn’t experience any. Gameplay was solid with solid pacing and story as well writing being the lead standout. Killer Frequency is a really solid Indie game and it’s presentation only convinced me of that.
Could Killer Frequency’s visuals be better? Yes. Could the gameplay setting be larger and more connected with combat? Maybe. I’m not going to nit-pick this game. I really loved it for what it is. Besides, I don’t believe in twisting video games into what I want them to be. I leave that to the devs.
Story
Killer Frequency story takes place during the 1980’s in a small town called Gallows Creek. You play as Forrest Nash ex bigwig Chicago DJ who moves to Gallows Creek to get away from his past to start a new.
Forrest Nash’s boss, radio producer Peggy Weaver is who you, the player interacts with the majority of the night shift. The story goes “Dawn” Marie Campbell along with her son Henry go on a killing spree in Gallows Creek as a revenge tour for the accidental murder of George Barrow years back which the town’s people and authorities covered up and kept hush. Marie was George’s lover.
During Killer Frequency you are tasked with saving Marie and Henry’s future slasher victims which nets the player more dialogue into unraveling the killer’s identity. I enjoyed the dialogue between all characters and the unfolding of the overarching story. Story can branch out depending on who you save.
I managed to save only three people and got everyone else killed including the protagonist at the end. Story may seem serious but it actually has a lot of humor filled moments. Forrest Nash was a likable protagonist until I got him killed via Henry. Killer Frequency ending could play out in a plethora of ways.
Gameplay
This Indie game features first person gameplay. You can pick up and hold two items. You can view items closely Resident Evil style. Killer Frequency has puzzles and clue finding gameplay elements.
There was one sequence where I had to find the right fuses outside the radio station in the alley to restart the station’s power. Other times I had to find keys or maps to help save victims.
Killer Frequency’s main gameplay mechanic is you/Forrest Nash running a DJ booth at KFAM Station. You have to put of vinyl, turn off, play commercial tapes in a old fashion cassette player (didn’t need a tutorial on that since I’m old). You also take live calls and shoot paper balls into a basket.
Gameplay is more walking and talking choice driven akin to walking sims. There is no combat in Killer Frequency and that to me made perfect sense since you’re a radio DJ. I enjoyed the chill nature and humor of Killer Frequency’s gameplay loop involving Peggy Weaver, taking calls, solving puzzles and trying to save lives.
Visuals/Graphics
The visuals and art were good and really lead me to believe I was back in the 1980’s in some small quant town running KFAM. The Witness and Team Fortress 2 have similar first person visual styles to Killer Frequency. Lighting and textures were okay but the solid framerate was the standout.
Sound/Music
The sound design and music really stood out and gave me that 80’s slasher flick vibe featuring heavy synth beats. Voice acting was entertaining and seamless between all characters creating believably funny tension filled moments.
Final Thoughts/Score
I am glad I decided to play through Killer Frequency. It’s a great Indie game that’s interesting, yet entertaining. It’s chill yet has some high tension sequences. Great pacing throughout it’s gameplay, puzzles and dialogue sequences. Depending on how many you saved can be short to medium length.
I’d say my playthrough was around 4 to 5 hours after saving only three people. You can save maybe twenty people or more? So the game length varies by the choices you make. I rate this game a buy. I really loved it. Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas! – Jason
Killer Frequency: A blast from the past being an 80's kid myself. I felt as if I was a DJ in a 80's slasher film. Really good stuff! – Jason
