Alright, I'm going to say something that may get me banned from the internet:

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System is the greatest video game console ever made.

There. I said it.

Not the PlayStation 2. Not the Xbox 360. Not the Nintendo Switch. Not the PS5. Not the Xbox Series X. And certainly not whatever expensive plastic box we're all going to be arguing about five years from now.

The SNES.

And yes, I'm a Gen X gamer, so maybe I'm biased.

But here's the thing: I actually remember when this stuff was happening.

I remember when getting a new video game was an EVENT. You didn't download a 97GB update while staring at a progress bar that says "2 hours remaining." You didn't have to create an account with a username, password, two-factor authentication and a blood sample just to play the game you bought.

You took the cartridge out of the box, blew on it because apparently we all thought that worked, shoved it into the console and played.

And if the game didn't work?

You took the cartridge out.

You blew on it again.

You put it back in.

And somehow this was considered advanced technical support.

🕹️ THE SNES WAS THE PERFECT GENERATION

The Super Nintendo launched in North America in 1991, right in the middle of one of the greatest periods in gaming history.

This was the 16-bit era.

Nintendo had the NES behind it. Sega was coming hard with the Genesis. The console wars were actually FUN.

You had kids arguing about Mario vs. Sonic at school.

You had magazines like Nintendo Power and GamePro sitting around with cheat codes and screenshots that you'd stare at for hours.

And you couldn't just go online and watch the entire game on YouTube before buying it.

You had to take a chance.

Sometimes that meant getting an incredible game.

Sometimes it meant spending $60 on something that sucked.

And if you bought a bad game?

Congratulations.

You owned a bad game.

There wasn't a 14-day digital refund policy waiting for you.

That made choosing games feel different.

And Nintendo absolutely delivered.

According to Nintendo's own sales data, the SNES/Super Famicom sold approximately 49.1 million consoles worldwide. Guinness World Records lists it as the best-selling fourth-generation console.

Nearly 50 million systems.

For a console that existed before social media, smartphones, digital downloads, online storefronts and influencers telling you what to buy every Tuesday.

That's impressive.

🧾 THE RECEIPTS: LOOK AT THIS GAME LIBRARY

Here's where the SNES argument gets ridiculous.

You don't have to pick ONE killer game.

You have to look at the entire library.

⭐ SUPER MARIO WORLD

This was the game that came with the SNES in North America.

And somehow Nintendo decided:

"Yeah, let's make one of the greatest platformers ever made and just throw it in the box."

Super Mario World introduced players to Dinosaur Land, Yoshi, secret exits, multiple paths, cape Mario and an absolutely ridiculous amount of hidden content.

It sold more than 20 million copies worldwide when counting the original release and its associated versions, making it one of the most successful Mario games ever.

And the crazy part?

People are STILL playing it.

🗡️ THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: A LINK TO THE PAST

This game basically showed everyone how an action-adventure game should be made.

Hyrule.

The Dark World.

Dungeons.

Heart containers.

Items.

Secrets.

Bosses.

A sword.

A shield.

And absolutely no NPC standing in front of you saying:

"HEY! HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE NEW MICROTRANSACTION STORE?"

Thank God.

A Link to the Past remains one of the most celebrated games in the history of the medium, and modern retrospectives still routinely place it near the very top of the SNES library. GamesRadar's 2026 ranking puts it at #1 among the best SNES games ever made.

👽 SUPER METROID

You want atmosphere?

Super Metroid.

You want exploration?

Super Metroid.

You want to wander around for 30 minutes wondering where the hell you're supposed to go?

Also Super Metroid.

This game basically invented the feeling of:

"I KNOW there's something over there. I just don't know how to get there yet."

And then you get a new ability and suddenly an area you've already explored opens up.

No giant waypoint screaming at you.

No GPS arrow.

No objective marker covering half the screen.

Just you, your brain and a map you probably didn't bother making.

🦍 DONKEY KONG COUNTRY

Then Rare showed up and basically said:

"Hey Nintendo, here's what a 16-bit game can look like."

Donkey Kong Country's pre-rendered graphics blew people's minds.

Seriously.

We went from pixelated sprites to this incredibly detailed jungle world and everyone thought we had basically entered the future.

And then you actually played it.

And it was GOOD.

Not just pretty.

Good.

Donkey Kong Country went on to sell roughly 9.3 million copies, while Donkey Kong Country 2 sold more than 5 million.

Not bad for a couple of apes stealing bananas.

🏎️ SUPER MARIO KART

Before there were massive online racing games with 400 cars, season passes and enough menus to qualify as an accounting program...

There was Mario Kart.

You picked Mario.

You picked Luigi.

You picked Bowser.

You threw shells at your friends.

Friendships were destroyed.

Controllers were nearly destroyed.

Parents yelled from the other room.

Gaming.

That's gaming.

The original Super Mario Kart sold approximately 8.76 million copies, putting it among the best-selling SNES games ever.

And the basic formula is still being used decades later.

That's one hell of a receipt.

🥊 STREET FIGHTER II

The SNES didn't just dominate platformers.

It could throw hands.

Street Fighter II became a massive phenomenon and brought the arcade experience into living rooms.

Ryu.

Ken.

Chun-Li.

Guile.

Blanka.

Dhalsim.

E. Honda.

Zangief.

And the greatest feeling in the world:

Finally beating the guy who had been destroying you for three straight hours.

The original Street Fighter II sold roughly 6.3 million copies, while Street Fighter II Turbo also moved more than four million.

Again...

Receipts.

🦖 YOSHI'S ISLAND

Then Nintendo basically decided that Super Mario World wasn't enough and made another incredible platformer.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

The crayon-like art style was completely different from everything else on the system.

And the gameplay was fantastic.

It also showed something important about the SNES:

Nintendo wasn't afraid to experiment.

Yoshi's Island wasn't just "Mario World 2 with new levels."

It had its own mechanics, visual identity and personality.

It sold more than 4 million copies.

⏱️ CHRONO TRIGGER

And then Square entered the chat.

If you're talking about RPGs, the SNES library gets borderline unfair.

Chrono Trigger.

Time travel.

Multiple eras.

Multiple endings.

Great characters.

Great combat.

Great music.

And a story that somehow managed to feel enormous without requiring you to spend 17 hours watching characters talk about their feelings before you finally get to control somebody.

Chrono Trigger is still routinely considered one of the greatest RPGs ever made.

And it came out on a cartridge.

A cartridge.

The same piece of technology we once had to blow into because we apparently believed human breath was a valid electrical repair method.

⚔️ FINAL FANTASY VI

Then you have Final Fantasy VI.

Or Final Fantasy III if you're talking about the original North American release.

This game had an enormous cast, an incredible soundtrack, a huge world, memorable villains and one of the most famous moments in RPG history.

And once again, the SNES was doing stuff people would later praise 32-bit consoles for doing.

The SNES library was absolutely loaded with RPGs:

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Secret of Mana
EarthBound
Super Mario RPG
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma
Breath of Fire
Lufia II

And that's only scratching the surface.

🌎 EARTHBOUND

Then there was EarthBound.

A weird, funny, charming RPG about kids fighting aliens, cultists, possessed objects and other bizarre enemies.

It didn't look like every other fantasy RPG.

It didn't sound like every other fantasy RPG.

It didn't behave like every other RPG.

It was weird.

Nintendo basically released a game that smelled like pizza, sarcasm and childhood anxiety and somehow it became a cult classic.

And yes, the game came with that gigantic strategy guide.

Remember those?

Physical books.

Made of paper.

You know, that ancient technology we used before YouTube walkthroughs.

🎮 AND THE CONTROLLER DESERVES CREDIT

Let's talk about the SNES controller.

Four face buttons.

Two shoulder buttons.

A D-pad.

Start.

Select.

Done.

That's it.

No analog sticks.

No touchpad.

No giant battery.

No headset jack.

No microphone.

No "please connect this controller to your account."

You picked it up and immediately knew what everything did.

And Nintendo's four-button diamond layout became the foundation for controller design that followed.

Then Nintendo added the shoulder buttons.

L and R.

Simple.

Brilliant.

And somehow decades later we're still using basically the same fundamental layout.

💿 MODERN CONSOLES ARE GREAT... BUT...

Now before somebody gets mad:

I'm not saying modern games suck.

They don't.

Modern games can be absolutely incredible.

We've got enormous open worlds, incredible graphics, online multiplayer, ray tracing, SSD loading, insane physics, cinematic storytelling and games that look like actual movies.

But modern gaming sometimes feels like it needs to calm the hell down.

You buy a game.

Install it.

Download an update.

Install another update.

Update your console.

Create an account.

Link another account.

Accept 47 pages of terms and conditions.

Download a shader cache.

Download another 30GB patch.

Then the game asks:

"Would you like to purchase the Deluxe Battle Pass?"

NO.

I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY THE GAME.

Meanwhile, the SNES is sitting in the corner like:

"Put the cartridge in, kid."

💾 THE OLD DAYS WERE DIFFERENT

Back then, games had to work when they shipped.

There was no:

"We'll patch that later."

There was no Day-One 65GB update.

There was no server shutdown turning your single-player game into a coaster.

There wasn't a storefront permanently begging you to buy something.

And you didn't have 900 games sitting in your digital library while playing the same three games for six months.

You had maybe 12 games.

And you played the hell out of them.

You knew every secret.

Every shortcut.

Every boss.

Every warp pipe.

Every hidden room.

Every cheat code.

You knew which cartridge belonged to which friend.

You knew which kid had Street Fighter II.

You knew who had Mortal Kombat.

You knew who had Chrono Trigger.

And you definitely knew who had a Game Genie.

That kid was basically a god.

🧾 THE FINAL SNES RECEIPT

Let's put the nostalgia aside for a second.

Here's the actual case:

SUPER NINTENDO LIBRARY

🏆 Super Mario World
🏆 The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
🏆 Super Metroid
🏆 Donkey Kong Country
🏆 Donkey Kong Country 2
🏆 Super Mario Kart
🏆 Street Fighter II
🏆 Street Fighter II Turbo
🏆 Yoshi's Island
🏆 Chrono Trigger
🏆 Final Fantasy IV
🏆 Final Fantasy VI
🏆 EarthBound
🏆 Super Mario RPG
🏆 Secret of Mana
🏆 F-Zero
🏆 Star Fox
🏆 Super Castlevania IV
🏆 Mega Man X
🏆 Contra III
🏆 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV
🏆 Super Punch-Out!!
🏆 Kirby Super Star
🏆 Super Bomberman
🏆 Pilotwings
🏆 Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
🏆 ActRaiser
🏆 Secret of Evermore
🏆 Breath of Fire II
🏆 NBA Jam
🏆 Mortal Kombat II
🏆 Final Fight
🏆 Killer Instinct
🏆 Earthworm Jim
🏆 Zombies Ate My Neighbors
🏆 The Lost Vikings

And I'm STILL leaving games out.

That's the problem with making this list.

There are too many good games.

GamesRadar's 2026 ranking of the best SNES games has A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid and Super Mario World occupying the top four spots, with Street Fighter II Turbo, Yoshi's Island, EarthBound and Super Mario Kart also making its top ten.

That's an absolutely stupidly good library.

📊 THE NUMBERS DON'T HURT EITHER

SNES worldwide sales: approximately 49.1 million

Status: Best-selling fourth-generation console according to Guinness World Records.

And look at some of the individual software numbers:

Game

Approx. SNES Sales

Super Mario World

20.61 million*

Donkey Kong Country

~9.3 million

Super Mario Kart

~8.76 million

Street Fighter II

~6.3 million

Donkey Kong Country 2

~5.15 million

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

~4.61 million

Yoshi's Island

~4.12 million

Street Fighter II Turbo

~4.1 million

Donkey Kong Country 3

~3.51 million

*Super Mario World's reported total depends on how bundled/re-release sales are counted, so you'll see different figures depending on the source. The point isn't that Nintendo won some spreadsheet competition — it's that the SNES had an absurd number of commercially successful games alongside its critical reputation.

🏆 SO WHAT CONSOLE IS THE GOAT?

PlayStation 2?

Fantastic console.

Xbox 360?

Absolutely incredible generation.

PS5?

Great hardware.

Switch?

Phenomenal concept.

Genesis?

Sega fans, calm down. I said what I said.

N64?

Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are basically nuclear weapons, but the cartridge limitations and smaller library keep it from taking the crown.

NES?

Legendary.

But the SNES took what the NES established and turned it into something special.

It had the perfect controller.

It had incredible 2D graphics.

It had phenomenal music.

It had some of the greatest RPGs ever made.

It had platformers.

Fighting games.

Racing games.

Shooters.

Adventure games.

Sports games.

Arcade ports.

Co-op games.

And Nintendo's first-party lineup was ridiculous.

Most importantly, the SNES was from an era when the game itself was the product.

Not the battle pass.

Not the store.

Not the season.

Not the cosmetic shop.

Not the roadmap.

Not the subscription.

The game.

You bought it.

You put it in.

You played it.

And if you were a kid in the early '90s, you probably sat about three feet from the television with the volume turned up while your parents yelled:

They didn't.

Because we were living through one of the greatest eras in gaming history.

So I'll stand by it:

And I'll happily argue about it in the comments.

Just understand one thing before you start typing:

I'm a Gen X gamer.

I've been preparing for this argument since 1991. Come at bro😂🎮

Looking for cheap games? Here's a list of sites worth checking before you buy anything.

🟦 STEAM

The obvious one for PC gamers. Check the official Steam sale page for current publisher sales, daily specials and other discounts.

👉 Steam Deals & Specials

🟩 FANATICAL

Great for Steam bundles and cheap PC game keys. Fanatical regularly runs build-your-own bundles and limited-time collections.

👉 Fanatical Game Deals

🟧 GREEN MAN GAMING

Another major PC game retailer with regular discounts on Steam and PC games.

👉 Green Man Gaming Deals

🟪 HUMBLE

Humble is worth checking for monthly Choice games, game bundles and charity bundles.

👉 Humble Bundle

🔵 STEAMDB

If you're a serious Steam shopper, SteamDB is one of the best places to track Steam discounts, historical prices and current Steam sales.

👉 SteamDB

🔥 ISTHEREANYDEAL

This is one of my favorite places to compare PC game prices across multiple legitimate stores instead of checking every store individually.

👉 IsThereAnyDeal

🟢 DEKU DEALS

Excellent for Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 deals and price history. It also tracks other platforms.

👉 Deku Deals

🎮 PLAYSTATION STORE

For PS5/PS4 players, check the official PlayStation Store sales page.

👉 PlayStation Store Deals

🟩 XBOX

Xbox regularly has game discounts and Game Pass-related offers.

👉 Xbox Game Deals

🔴 NINTENDO

Check Nintendo's official sales page for Switch and Switch 2 digital game discounts.

👉 Nintendo Sales & Deals

💡 TIP: Before buying a game, check a couple of these sites first. A game that's $60 on one store might be $20 somewhere else.

Feel free to add any gaming merchant that could help people save money in this sticky thread. Thanks! 👍

I'll try to keep the individual deal threads in this forum updated and close them when the offers expire.

Man, September's turning into one of those months where the release calendar is genuinely overwhelming instead of the usual late-summer dead zone. Figured I'd make a proper thread instead of scattering my thoughts across three different single-release threads that'll die in a day.

Biggest one on my radar is Anthrax dropping Cursum Perficio on the 18th. Been a weird few years for thrash veterans putting out genuinely vital new material versus just touring on nostalgia, and from the early singles I've heard this doesn't sound like a band coasting. Scott Ian's riff work still has that unmistakable snap to it, and Belladonna's voice has aged into this rougher, more lived-in tone that actually suits the darker subject matter they're leaning into this time around. Not gonna pretend I've got the full album yet since it's not out as I'm typing this, but if the singles are representative, this might be their strongest full-length since Worship Music. Curious if anyone's caught early advance streams and can weigh in before the rest of us get it properly.

Same day, Sept 18th, Luke Bryan's dropping Signs, his ninth studio album, which is a genuinely different lane than the Anthrax record obviously but I know we've got a few country fans lurking in these threads who don't always get represented in the metal/rock heavy discourse that dominates this section. Been a minute since a Luke Bryan album felt like an actual event instead of just contractual output, curious if the "Country and She Knows It" single is indicative of the record leaning back into the more stripped-down, actually-country sound instead of the pop-leaning stuff he's dabbled with over the years.

For the deep cuts crowd, there's a genuinely wild amount of reissue and archival stuff dropping this month too, which honestly might be the more interesting story of September if you're the kind of person who cares about that side of things. King Crimson's Islands is getting the expanded 1CD/Blu-ray treatment with a 2026 Steven Wilson Atmos and 5.1 remix, and if you've heard any of Wilson's previous prog remix work you know this isn't a lazy cash-grab remaster, the guy actually treats these old recordings with the kind of care that makes you hear songs you've known for decades in a completely new way. Islands specifically is such a divisive record in the Crimson catalog too, curious if a proper Atmos mix changes anyone's mind on it, I know plenty of people who consider it the weak link between Lizard and Larks' Tongues and I'm curious if better spatial mixing reveals stuff that got lost in the original mix.

Also can't not mention the absolutely massive Joy Division live box, Eternal, 14 discs of live performances. That's an insane amount of material for a band with such a criminally short discography due to Curtis's death, and I'm genuinely curious how consistent the quality is across that many recordings versus it being a "for completionists only" kind of release. Anyone here actually planning to sit through all 14 discs or is this more of a "own it, dip in occasionally" kind of purchase? Feels like the kind of box set you buy more out of respect for the band's legacy than any real expectation you'll listen front to back more than once.

On the heavier underground side, worth flagging that Green Lung's Necropolitan and Anthrax dropping the same week as a genuinely packed metal release slate, feels like label scheduling just decided to cram half the year's metal calendar into a three week window this month. Also seeing Emma Ruth Rundle has something dropping mid-month too, "These Killing Times," and if you're not familiar with her stuff and you're into that doom-adjacent, emotionally devastating singer-songwriter thing, she's consistently one of the more interesting voices working in that space right now, worth checking out even if metal's not usually your thing.

What I keep coming back to though is just how weirdly bifurcated this month's release slate feels, you've got legacy artists putting out genuinely new, vital material (Anthrax specifically feels like they've still got something to prove which is wild for a band this many decades in), sitting right alongside this wave of archival/reissue material that's clearly targeting the "give the die-hards a reason to double dip" crowd. Not a complaint exactly, more just an observation about where the industry's at right now, new album cycles and legacy catalog mining happening simultaneously in a way that feels more pronounced this month than usual.

Also just have to say, purely as a longtime physical media collector, the vinyl reissue game has gotten genuinely excessive at this point. Hole's Live Through This getting a limited all-analog 180g vinyl reissue is great and all, but between that, the T. Rex box, the Todd Rundgren live release, and everything else dropping this specific month, my wallet is not built for a September this stacked with "must own on vinyl" reissues on top of actual new music I want to support too.

Anyway, curious what everyone else in here is actually picking up this month versus just adding to a mental "maybe eventually" list. Feel like this thread could turn into a good running discussion as reviews start trickling in for the Anthrax record specifically once people who preordered actually get their hands on it properly. What's everyone's most anticipated drop of the month, and is anyone actually tackling that Joy Division box start to finish or are we all being realistic about our listening habits here?

Everyone talked about this book so much when it came out that I think I actually avoided it out of a weird contrarian instinct, assumed the hype had to be at least partially overblown. Finally picked it up this summer and yeah, I was wrong to wait, this might be one of the best "magic system as metaphor for colonialism" books I've read, and that's a surprisingly crowded subgenre at this point.

The linguistics-as-magic concept alone would've carried a weaker book, but pairing it with such a specific, well-researched historical setting made it hit way harder than a more generic fantasy version of the same idea would have. The back third especially is doing some genuinely uncomfortable, necessary work that I wasn't fully braced for going in.

Kuang's got a new book out as part of this fall's big release slate too from what I've seen mentioned in other threads, so this feels like good timing to finally have caught up. Anyone else a Babel latecomer, or was I really just the last person to get to this one?

Final season's coming later this fall and I figured I should actually finish the show properly instead of continuing to half-follow the discourse without context. Started from episode 1 a few weeks back and I'm now fully hooked in a way that's making me irrationally upset I didn't start this years ago when it first became a thing.

The dual timeline structure is doing so much more work than I expected going in, I assumed it'd feel like a gimmick after a few episodes but the way the adult timeline mysteries and the survival timeline horror feed into each other keeps escalating in ways that feel genuinely earned instead of just mystery-box padding for its own sake.

Trying to actually finish catching up before the final season premieres so I can experience it in real time with everyone instead of avoiding threads for months after the fact. No spoilers please for anyone who's already all caught up, but curious what the general consensus has been on how the show's handled its slower stretches, since I've heard mixed things about pacing in the middle seasons.
